SQL & XML Working Together

What are SQLX.org and SQL/XML?

What is SQLX.org?

SQLX.org is a web site that makes the SQL/XML standard, and the technology that it includes, more highly visible to interested parties. The web site makes it possible for the SQL and XML communities to follow the development of SQL/XML as it occurs and to readily ascertain the current status of the standard's progression.

(Some people have developed a habit of using the name "SQLX" to refer to the SQL/XML standard and its capabilities. That undoubtedly resulted from the name of this web site and the former SQLX Group that initiated the work. Try to avoid developing that habit!)

What is SQL/XML?

SQL/XML is an ANSI and ISO standard that provides support for using XML in the context of an SQL database system. Because SQL is the standard language for accessing and managing data stored in relational databases, it is natural that enterprises and users worldwide need the ability to integrate their XML data into their relational data through the use of SQL facilities.

SQL/XML makes it possible to store your XML documents in your SQL database, to query those documents using XPath and XQuery, and to "publish" your existing SQL data in the form of XML documents.

For more information about SQL/XML, you can contact the chair of the ad hoc group that develops many SQL/XML proposals in the USA:
